The Somerset County Environmental Education Center
The Environmental Education Center is a great place to learn about the natural environment. It is located right down the road from The Raptor Trust – Bird Rehabilitation and Education Center, which I wrote about in my last post. We visited it on the same day!
Located in Lord Stirling Park in The Great Swamp area, the center is in a setting of great natural beauty.
The Center is a wonderful place for families to learn more about the great outdoors.
Their mission statement:
Dedicated to stimulating awareness and understanding of the natural world in order to foster a sense of responsibility for its care and use through environmental, cultural, and recreational learning experiences, as well as serving as trustees to preserve, maintain, and improve undeveloped and developed natural areas of Somerset County parkland.
In an homage to Lord Stirling, “Lord Bearling” greets you at the entrance.
Fun For The Whole Family
There are wonderful ways to learn more about the environment at the Center. It is a great place for the entire family to visit – and it is totally free!
As their website states:
The Great Swamp Experience opened in February 2017 and is a permanent, interactive, educational exhibit located downstairs in the EEC. The exhibit highlights historical and ecological information about the Great Swamp. Children can crawl into a beaver lodge, feel animal fur, or explore the toddler area. Adults can enjoy viewing habitat vignettes, archeological artifacts, and learning about hydrology, sustainability, and the park’s geographic location.

The Center is located at 190 Lord Stirling Road in Basking Ridge, New Jersey.
They are open from 9-5 daily, although they are closed on holidays and on Saturdays in July and August.
