The Montclair Art Museum | Montclair, New Jersey
The Montclair Art Museum
Even though Montclair, New Jersey has fewer than 40,000 residents, it boasts of many parks, a diverse population, and a strong interest in the arts.
The town even has a fine art museum, situated on a beautiful street with quite a few splendid mansions.
The museum has a special collection of the works of George Inness (1825-1894), a well-known painter from the Hudson River School of Art.ย
He resided in Montclair in his later years and painted many landscapes of Montclair.
The Montclair Art Museum celebrated its 100th Birthday in 2014. Even if you donโt go inside, you can see some interesting art outside the museum.
The top photo and the next two photos are of a sculpture by a Montclair-based artist, Tom Nussbaum.
It is called Listen, was made in 2008, and it is constructed of polyurethane over fiberglass.
The next project is made out of wood, Plexiglas, metal screening, acrylic paint, roofing paper, tar, wallpaper, and an 11-watt bulb.
It is by Donna Dennis and is called Blue Cabin from Tourist Cabins on Park Avenue, 1976-2007 (2007).
The next sculpture is called The Sun Vow by Hermon Atkins MacNeil (1866-1947).ย
It was made of bronze in 1899 and cast in 1902.
The last sculpture shown here is Earth Mother by Allan Houser (1914-1994). It was made of bronze in 1981 and cast in 1986.
The Museum offers free admission from 5-9 p.m. on the first Thursday of the month and from 1-5 p.m. on the first Friday of the month.

the Earth Mother sculpture makes me want to reach out and touch it. The curves remind me of Henry Moore's work.

Just came back to say thank you for your comments. They ended up in my spam filter, but I've rescued them and that's why you didn't see them on the blog immediately. Thank you.
Seeking Lavender Lane
Was at Thursday Favorites Link party and saw this. I had to stop by, not only since I am a Jersey girl, but also I went to Montclair and I know my great uncle had art work displayed at the Montclair Museum. Really neat to see this page!

I was to Montclair once many, many years ago. Montclair State Teacher's College was there, but I think I might have heard that they changed the name? I found the Listen statue very interesting. At first I thought the little guy was whispering into his ear, but then I realized the little guy was listening. Kind of strange, but funny at the same time.

Thanks for rescuing them! ๐

It is kind of a funny sculpture.
Montclair State's name was first changed to Montclair State College, and around 1994 it achieved university status and became Montclair State University. ๐
