Hot Dog Johnny’s . . . in Butzville?

Hot Dog Johnny’s is a very famous hot dog stand in Buttzville, New Jersey.

Buttzville?

Yes, the name has been the butt of many jokes. It is the name of a census-designated place within rural White Township, New Jersey.

The names are indeed bizarre. But there are good reasons for the names Buttzville and White Township.

Buttzville was named after a person. According to Wikipedia:

Buttzville was founded in 1839 by Michael Robert Buttz, and named for his son, Liam Oakes Buttz. It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names.

White Township was named after Alexander White, who built a mansion in the area. According to Wikipedia:

The township was named after Alexander White, who came to the area sometime before 1760 and built a stone mansion called “The White House” near a place called Roxburg.

It was all rather confusing to the poor GPS on my phone, which insisted that we were actually in nearby Belvidere. I guess my GPS likes Belvidere!

The Legendary Hot Dog Stand

Anyway, Buttzville, despite only having 146 residents, has a unique attraction: Hot Dog Johnny’s!

The legendary Hot Dog Johnny’s has been family-owned and operated since the family started their hot dog stand out of a little hut near the rural part of Route 46.

Here is the Original Hot Dog Johnny’s:

They quickly outgrew that stand and set up shop right on Route 46.

They are considered one of the most popular roadside attractions in the United States.

There was a cute article about the place:

Among the iconic images that bring joy to the summer are hot dogs on the grill, hot dogs at the ballpark, and hot dogs at the summer street fairs. With all the hot dog stands that dot the American landscape, there are few places in all of America that are as iconic as Hot Dog Johnny’s in Buttzville, New Jersey. Located on Route 46 along the Pequest River, Hot Dog Johnny’s has been a part of New Jersey’s history for the last 77 years. Hot Dog Johnny’s is one of a kind.

Also, if you are in the area, you can have some delicious hot dogs, French fries, and birch beer – or buttermilk if you prefer.

We always ask to have our hot dogs “with everything.”

They are open year-round. Cash only! No menu!

Service: abrupt. They are busy! Know what you want when you get to the window!

On The Banks Of The Pequest River

Hot Dog Johnny’s is located on the banks of the Pequest River

The river, which runs behind the restaurant, is stocked with trout, so you will usually see someone fishing there in warmer weather.
