Little Red Schoolhouse
Little Red Schoolhouse is the pride and joy of beautiful Florham Park, New Jersey.
It is in their township logo and all over the town website.
It was known as Columbia School District No. 5, was built in 1866, and was in continual use for classes until 1914.
It is now a museum, and the Historical Society of Florham Park meets there.
It is “dedicated to the men and women of Florham Park who served in World War II.”
According to the Wikipedia page:
It is a vernacular Italianate one-story narrow red brick masonry building with a steep roof and tall 9/9 windows topped with gently arches. In 1905, it was expanded from four bays to the current six. The open belfry at the front peak with working bell and the gable-end entrance make it instantly identifiable as a typical 19th century one-room schoolhouse. Its location at the historic crossroads of Florham Park has remained a key reminder of the borough’s rural origins. The classic schoolhouse for is the borough’s icon, appearing on the town flag, letter head, website, and public works and first responder vehicles.
I have driven by this building literally thousands of times (I grew up in the area), and never thought of going inside (it’s not open very often). I definitely have to go inside one day!
Anyway, the borough of Florham Park opens the site on certain days Fourth of July and you can ring the bell!

The sign shows that it was designated as Columbia School District No. 5. The building resides on Columbia Turnpike.
Built on site of 1830 wooden school. Present structure predates Florham Park Borough by 33 years. Classes held here continuously until 1914.

Nice to see that the schoolhouse has been preserved although I never saw it even though I worked nearby in Madison NJ for many years. I just read thatbthe Doris Duke Foundation wants to demolish the mansionin Duke Park because the cost of renovation would be prohibitive.

Charming! There's a Little Red School House in Delaware I used to drive by all the time, too. It was built only 20 years ago to look like a historical building.

Anyone wanting to ring the school bell is welcome to do so. Students visiting typically complete a short quiz after a short presentation. When they pass (they always do), they are rewarded with the opportunity to ring the schoolhouse bell. Adults are always welcome to do so. See Rich or Christine Davidson, or docent Peter Nicolas.
The museum is typically open the first Sunday of each month from 2-4pm, except during inclement weather. A new roof was added in October and during the work the museum was closed. Hopefully, we can re-open on February 4, 2017, if no snow!
