Morley Safer and Modern Art (1993)
Morley Safer And Modern Art I grew up watching 60 Minutes on CBS (Channel 2 in New York). My parents would watch the show every Sunday night, and so I watched it with them. It is a show that has a style all its own — just like The New York Times and The New Yorker. Mike Wallace, Morley Safer, “Gunga Dan” Rather, Andy Rooney, Harry Reasoner, Point/Counterpoint — I remember it all. On Tuesday, I posted about art at The Montclair Art Museum. I really liked all of the sculptures on the front lawn. I thought they were creative and interesting. However, I have always remembered a controversial 1993…

The Montclair Art Museum | Montclair, New Jersey
The Montclair Art Museum Even though Montclair, New Jersey has fewer than 40,000 residents, it boasts of many parks, a diverse population, and a strong interest in the arts. The town even has a fine art museum, situated on a beautiful street with quite a few splendid mansions. The museum has a special collection of the works of George Inness (1825-1894), a well-known painter from the Hudson River School of Art. He resided in Montclair in his later years and painted many landscapes of Montclair. The Montclair Art Museum celebrated its 100th Birthday in 2014. Even if you don’t go inside, you can see some interesting art outside the museum. …

The Pink Cherry Blossoms are in Full Bloom | Newark, New Jersey
Cherry Blossom Pink! The cherry trees in Branch Brook Park in Newark, New Jersey are now in full bloom! We had a weekend of gorgeous weather and they responded beautifully in an explosion of PINK! These pink ones are my favorites. They inspire me in so many ways. They bring joy and beauty to the thousands of visitors who come to see them every year. Somehow I always think of this song when I see them! I was humming that #1 song as I visited the lovely flowering trees on Sunday. You can see more at Cherry Blossom Time, The Trees Are Starting to Bloom, and Cherry Blossom Pink. Thanks…

Cherry Blossoms In Branch Brook Park The cherry blossoms in Branch Brook Park have been a bit slow in blooming this year, due to the very cold and harsh winter we had. The dark pink ones have been reluctant to bloom, but some of the others are near or getting past their peak bloom. Hopefully, the dark pink ones will bloom soon. These photos were taken on Tuesday, April 28, 2015. You can read about the historic trees and the history of the park here. You can also read The Trees Are In Full Bloom. It’s Not Nice to Fool Mother Nature TV Commercial
It’s Not Nice To Fool Mother Nature! Dena Dietrich played this character in Chiffon Margarine commercials in the early 1970s. The first one was so successful that she did quite a few more for the rest of the decade. This was the first one, with the legendary tagline, “It’s not nice to fool Mother Nature!” That’s Mason Adams as the announcer. He was famous for voicing the tag line: “With a name like Smucker’s, it has to be good” for Smucker’s jams and jellies. He voiced those for many years, in addition to many, many others. He also co-starred on the “Lou Grant” television series. The “Mother Nature” commercial was…

The Cherry Blossom Trees are Starting to Bloom | Newark, New Jersey
Cherry Blossom Trees Are Starting To Bloom The cherry blossom trees in Newark’s Branch Brook Park are starting to bloom! Most of the park is in Newark, but a small portion is in neighboring Belleville. They were late again this year because of the long and harsh winter. More cherry blossom trees are being planted to replace some old trees and also to increase the amount of cherry blossom trees in the park to over 5,000! That’s more than Washington, D.C.! As a matter of fact, it is the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in the United States! The park’s design was created by the firm of…

Port Murray Post Office and Abandoned Train Station | Mansfield Township, New Jersey
Port Murray Has A Post Office That Is A Trailer But what is more interesting is what is behind the post office/trailer – an old caboose and abandoned train station. Port Murray, which is a section of Mansfield Township, was an important railroad stop in the 1800s in this part of rural Warren County, New Jersey. This, in addition to the Morris Canal, brought industry to this remote area. The station was on the Morris and Essex Railroad, about 67 miles from New York City. In 1996, the Port Murray Historic District was listed on The National Register of Historic Places. You can read more about it here. Abandoned Train…

You Deserve A Break Today Commercial (1970s) | Television
You Deserve A Break Today McDonald’s is struggling nowadays in the fast food market. Perhaps they should drop that idiotic campaign and extremely stale “I’m lovin’ it” and go back to this classic from the 1970s, with a new cast, of course. Oh, right they can’t, because for some stupid reason they abandoned the rights to the song. The Actors This advertisement is filled with very talented performers. I spy John Amos (appearing at the time in The Mary Tyler Moore Show and future father in Good Times), Anson Williams (future Potsie in Happy Days), John Wheeler (the manager with the operatic voice, I remember him singing operatically as part…
